Go Conscious Earth, (GCE) a US/Congolese NGO working on rainforest conservation and rural development in the Congo Basin, is seeking to add one or two new members to its Board of Directors! GCE works in the Congo Basin rainforest in the area around Lake Tumba, located to the south of Mbandaka in Équateur province, home to vast peatlands and high-integrity rainforests, as well as endemic species such as bonobos.
GCE’s model supports local communities and Indigenous Peoples to secure tenure rights to their forest lands, leveraging DRC’s progressive legislation that grants communities the right in perpetuity to manage their own local community forest concessions (CFCLs). Establishing CFCLs allows local communities to control and manage the forest resources that their lives and prosperity depend on, an approach that has been recognized as one of the most impactful conservation models for tropical forests, slowing deforestation while safeguarding human rights.
Once a community has secured the rights to their land, GCE continues to work with them to strengthen their ability to manage and protect their forest concession and to develop sustainable livelihood activities that allow them to responsibly exploit and benefit from the resources available to them in their concession.
